Calder's Flamingo
Standing 53 feet tall and weighing over 50 tons, the “Flamingo” sculpture stands at the Federal Plaza in downtown, Chicago. In stark contrast to Alexander Calder’s iconic mobiles that move with the wind, the giant Flamingo is stationery and made of solid steel. Calder chose to finish the piece in a brilliant red (now known as “Calder’s red”) to set it off from the black and steel office buildings surrounding the huge sculpture. This ongoing photo essay includes selections that incorporate long exposure, double/multiple exposure and rotating camera techniques.
