Damen Silos, Chicago IL

Located at 29th Street and Damen on the South Branch of the Chicago River, sits a group of run-down and interlocking grain silos. At fifteen stories tall and covered in graffiti, these unsettling structures speak of a time when Chicago was the agricultural hub of the country. Since an explosion in 1977, the complex was abandoned. These silos and the accompanying warehouses sit on a sprawling and run-down property surrounded by steel fences -and now guarded around the clock by security teams.

Presently looking like something out of a dystopian Hollywood move set, the entire compound is hanging on to existence by some unknown hand that resists its complete demolition and redevelopment.  But the clock is ticking. I knew I had to venture in with my camera before the wrecking balls came and took another piece of history and an architectural curiosity of Chicago.
